In theory and methodology of wrestling the most important quality criterion for a macrocycle design in the pre-competitive wrestler training is assumed to be the dynamics of the level of special endurance of athletes. In the article the authors analyze competitive performance in modern Greco-Roman wrestling with a special attention to the recent (2018) changes in the rules of competitions and their effects on the competitive performance of wrestlers in every weight class in the 2010-18 Russian Championships. Subject to qualitative and quantitative data analysis were 398 video replays and documentation of competitive bouts in the championships that offered a direct elimination scheme with bonuses for the losers. It was found that the new rules of competitions have been of positive effect on the wrestlers’ activity and intensity of the competitive bouts, since the old rules allowed multiple standard positions that largely decided the bouts, effectively limited the technical toolkits and, hence, the quality and quantity of the technical actions and competitive success rates. It is recommended to revise the pre-season training systems in Greco-Roman wrestling with account of the new rules of competitions.
