This article discusses the problems of fitness of 9-10 year old athletes in context of requirements of the Russian physical culture and sport complex "Ready for Labour and Defence". There were identified problem areas in the development of physical qualities of children engaged in athletics at the stage of initial training. The findings were compared with those of other researchers, who studied this problem.
