Abstract
Objective of the study is to theoretically substantiate, develop and experimentally test a methodology for the non-pharmacological correction of ADHD in students with the help of basketball exercises within standard physical education classes. Methods and structure of the study. The sample comprised 50 students of years 1–4 of Petrozavodsk State University (average age 20.3 years). An author's questionnaire was applied (demographics, ADHD symptom self-assessment questionnaire Part A, impulsivity scale, academic performance, motor activity). A repeated questionnaire survey was conducted after 12–16 weeks. Results and conclusions. An official diagnosis of ADHD persisted in 16.0% of students; however, the high level of symptoms decreased from 38.0% to 4.0%. The average GPA increased from 3.99 to 4.20. The proportion of students who noted a significant negative impact of symptoms on academic performance decreased from 60.0 to 10.0%. 84.0% of respondents began to engage in regular physical activity (it had been 40.0%). All changes are statistically significant (p<0.001). The proposed methodology is designed for 12–16 weeks (2–3 classes per week of 60–90 minutes). Each class includes a warm-up, the main block of basketball exercises, game elements and a cool-down. The exercises are aimed at developing inhibitory control ("Stop-Go", "Freeze – unfreeze"), sustained and selective attention, working memory ("Colour shot") and cognitive flexibility (mini-basketball 3×3). The intensity is medium and high (HR 130–160 bpm). The analytical literature review confirmed the prospects of basketball for ADHD correction. The developed methodology possesses high practical significance and can be implemented without additional costs. Teachers receive a ready-made toolkit for working with students exhibiting ADHD symptoms.
