Abstract

Objective of the study is to develop and experimentally test objective criteria for sports selection for the university basketball team based on comprehensive testing of physical and coordination qualities of students aged 18–22. Methods and structure of the study. The research involved 15 male students (mean age 19.7±1.2 years) with basketball experience. A set of 10 standardised tests was applied: standing vertical jump and running vertical jump, 3/4 court sprint, lateral agility test, 20 m shuttle run, ball dribbling “slalom”, single-leg balance with closed eyes, reaction to a moving object, bench press/pull-ups, and a 5v5 game test. Data were standardised by calculating Z-scores. The comprehensive selection criterion is the sum of Z-scores across 8 key tests. For additional validation of the system, testing was conducted with the university basketball team: all starting players recorded high values of the comprehensive criterion. In addition, testing was conducted during an elective physical education session “Basketball”, where individual students demonstrated results sufficient for selection to the university team. Results and conclusions. Based on the main testing results, 12 out of 15 candidates (80%) passed the selection. Correlation analysis revealed high internal consistency of the tests (r = 0.758–0.939, p<0.01). The strongest correlations were established between speed-strength, agility indicators and the game test. The developed system increases the objectivity and effectiveness of selection, significantly reduces subjectivism and the elimination of promising students. The results can be directly implemented in the practice of physical education departments of universities when forming basketball teams.
