Objective of the study is to determine the attitudes of first-year college students towards skiing instruction at school and their current level of proficiency in basic technical skills in accordance with the requirements of the educational standard.
Methods and structure of the study. The study assessed the level of technical proficiency in skiing among year 9 school leavers from the Republic of Karelia, now first-year students at a medical college, and evaluated their attitudes towards the organisation of skiing lessons at school. The study involved a survey of 40 first-year college students who had completed year 9 of general education school.
Results and conclusions. The results showed that only 5% of respondents had a positive attitude towards ski training lessons, 20% of school pupils showed no interest in them, and 65% experienced negative emotions. Furthermore, 10% of students stated that they had never taken part in ski training lessons at all. An analysis of the reasons behind former school pupils’ negative attitudes towards ski lessons revealed the following key problematic factors: a subjective factor stemming from the psychological and age-related characteristics of secondary school pupils; the students’ insufficient financial means and the educational institution’s lack of sports equipment, the monotony of the subject, and fear of adverse weather conditions. The study showed that to engage students in ski training, it is necessary to improve infrastructure and modernise lessons (using game-based methods, a personalised approach, standards tailored to individual preferences and abilities, downhill skiing, relays, etc.), holding lessons during periods of favourable weather conditions, showing spectacular competitions, and joint lessons and walks with parents.
