Objective of the study is to identify the psychophysiological characteristics of coaches who have not previously been involved in elite sport, and of top-level athletes who have transitioned into coaching after concluding their careers in elite sport, in terms of their stress resilience, self-control, motivation, anxiety and work capacity in their future professional activities.
Methods and structure of the study. An analysis was conducted of the characteristics of the professional activities of coach-instructors based on the results of our own research and data from the scientific literature. Psychophysiological indicators characterising the coaches’ state of adaptation to stress were studied in both groups using the following methods: the Luscher test, the Kettell test, the Ehlers questionnaire, the proofreading test, the tapping test and the SMR (sensory-motor or simple visual-motor reaction). Their levels of anxiety, tension, conflict, and other factors were examined.
Results and conclusions. The study of psychophysiological indicators reflecting the body’s state of adaptation to physical and mental stress, in coaches holding high sporting ranks and amateur coaches who had not previously participated in high-performance sport, indicated a significantly higher level of anxiety and a slight decrease in physical performance in the main group of coaches compared with the control group.
Since the body’s capacity to adapt to increased stress in individuals involved in elite sport is not unlimited, this necessitates strict medical monitoring of their health, both whilst participating in sport and when transitioning to coaching and teaching roles.
Keywords: elite sport, psychophysiological indicators in coaches, emotional stress, physical performance.
