Objective of the study is to determine the degree of correlation between the level of physical fitness and the morphofunctional capabilities of medical students.
Methods and structure of the study. The physical fitness level of 148 male and female students aged 17-21 from the paediatrics faculty was determined after they completed the control standards conducted during practical physical education classes. The students ran 100, 500 (young women) and 1000 (young men) metres, performed standing long jumps, squats and sit-ups (maximum number of repetitions in one minute). To assess their morphofunctional capabilities, the following indicators were measured: VLC (vital lung capacity), Stange test, Genchi test, BMI (body mass index) and VI (vital index). The average values of the physical exercise results and functional test indicators were calculated, and then their correlation analysis was performed.
Results and conclusions. During the correlation analysis between the results of the control standards and the morphofunctional indicators of students (young men and women) of the paediatric faculty, it was not possible to establish significant correlations. The correlation coefficients ranged from 0.2 to 0.5, indicating a weak relationship. The exception was the 1000-metre run for young men, with which the morphofunctional indicators showed a moderate correlation. It was concluded that the level of physical fitness of medical students does not fully reflect their physical health. At the end, recommendations were made on the additional conduct of medical examinations during practical physical education classes, which will allow for a more accurate assessment of the students' health.
