Objective of the study is to identify the characteristics of the transformation and institutionalization of physical culture during different periods of the country's development in the 20th century.
Methods and structure of the study. The main research algorithm is a general historical analysis technique, the practice of systematization, and a secondary assessment of documents that define the evolution of physical culture in the 20th century.
Results and conclusions. Seven stages of physical culture development in Russia in the 20th century have been identified and scientifically substantiated. Each stage is characterized by its own features, determined by the socio-economic conditions of the state's development. This periodization allows researchers to correlate specific aspects of the development of physical culture with the general historical context, which allows for a deeper understanding of the causes and patterns that determine the development of physical culture at each stage. The proposed periodization can be used in the study of the history of physical culture and sport, as well as in the development of a strategy for the development of physical culture in modern Russia.
