Objective of the study was to determine the functionality of modern feature films in Russian, thematically related to the biography of famous Soviet and Russian athletes and coaches, as an actual methodological tool for developing the skills of all types of speech activity of foreign students.
Methods and structure of the study. Raising the question of the use of sports film drama in the learning process determined the structure of the study and its methods. In the course of the study, a methodology for teaching Russian as a foreign language (RFL) was developed, which included a system of exercises for the film “Champions: Faster. Higher. Stronger” (2016). The unified contour of this topic is determined by the relevance of the lexical and grammatical topic "Autobiography" at all stages of language learning, the psychological and age characteristics of the audience and the novelty of the material. Pedagogical research was conducted at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, which was attended by foreign students. Mastering the sports discourse was carried out in the form of independent work in the format of distance learning (DL).
Results and conclusions. The appeal of modern cinema to the genre of drama or melodrama, based on the autobiographical data of a famous athlete, allows you to broadcast culturally determined moral principles, placing the image of an athlete and the image of a hero, winner, a person with a strong character, patriot, lyrical hero in a single associative series and make conclusion about the role of sport in the life of an individual and the whole country in a certain period of its development.
When referring to the topic of sports in modern cinema as a means of studying Russian as a foreign language, the following was revealed: the refusal to perform traditional grammatical exercises in favor of watching an autobiographical film (series) motivates foreign students to learn the language, contributes to the formation of business writing skills (“Autobiography/summary"), destroying stereotypes about the country of the language being studied, becomes a catalyst for the interpenetration of cultures, forming, clarifying and enriching the national linguistic picture of the world in the field of the national history of physical culture and sports.
Independent work in the DL format when studying RFL serves as a means of forming intercultural competence based on a communicative-activity approach, which determines the need to turn to modern feature films and series about famous athletes, because Russia, its history and culture are inextricably linked with the history of sports, its athletes and their achievements.
