Objective of the study was to identify the causes and directions of changes in the social context of the development of martial arts and martial arts in Russia at the present stage.
Methods and structure of the study. The material is based on a series of concrete sociological studies and scientific-practical conferences conducted over the past two years.
Results and conclusions. The main reasons for the decline in mass demand for martial arts in modern Russian reality are of a pronounced socio-economic and political, and therefore objective nature, which, for its part, can hardly be significantly influenced by the field of martial arts as a subordinate and secondary area of social practice.
The domestic field of martial arts is entering another period of dominance of the applied direction over the sports one, with attempts, characteristic of such periods, to use sports in the interests of applied training and for solving applied problems.
The scientific forecast of the future development of the domestic field of martial arts implies a qualitative differentiation of the activities of its various components in the near future and, accordingly, a purely specific approach to the analysis and evaluation of each individual trend.

Keywords: social context, socio-economic sphere, politics, military-political situation, domestic martial arts, applied nature, scientific forecast.
