Objective of the study was to assess the involvement in physical recreation in the urban environment of student youth living in various regions of our country (in the Central European part of Russia, in the Urals, Yugra North).
Methods and structure of the study. In the course of the study, a questionnaire was used to assess the involvement of an individual in physical recreation in an urban environment. The study involved 660 young people aged 18 to 25 who study at universities and live in large and medium-sized cities in various regions of Russia.
Results and conclusions. Physical recreation classes showed no significant differences among young people living in different regions of Russia: health care is the main goal for most of the subjects, the importance of improving the physique is also noted, as is the possibility of developing physical qualities and improving well-being. The preferred types of physical culture and sports activities during leisure are determined not only by the climatic and geographical features of the places of residence, but also by the implemented regional policy to popularize certain sports and sports areas among young people. In addition to unwillingness to leave the comfort zone and difficulties of emotional and volitional self-regulation, 34% of Ugra youth consider unfavorable weather conditions to be barriers preventing the active use of physical culture and outdoor sports during leisure time.

Keywords: active leisure, involvement, physical culture and sports preferences, motive, potential participant.
