Sports orienteering to build professional competency of future geologists

Objective of the study was to substantiate the implementation of physical education and sports disciplines using sports orienteering as a means of building professional competency in students majoring in Geology.
Methods and structure of the study. The educational experiment was conducted at Irkutsk State University from 2016 through 2021. The experimental program consisted of three stages: analytical, basic, and final.
Results and conclusions. The study enabled to identify professionally important skills and qualities contributing to the formation of PC-6 that can be acquired through sports orienteering. We developed, theoretically substantiated and proved by experiment the effectiveness of the methodology of implementation of physical education and sports disciplines using sports orienteering as a means to build professional competency of future professional geologists. The implementation of physical education and sports disciplines using sports orienteering as a means of formation of professional competency in students majoring in Geology proved its effectiveness, which substantiates its application to the future professional geologists.
