Introduction. One of significant fundamental elements in the psychological structure of sport activities is a cognitive component of individual sport culture, which provides the effective application of students’ cognitive skills to the selected sport [1].

The aim of the research to substantiate experimentally the effectiveness of elaborated methods for the development of a cognitive component of student sports culture in the framework of activation of education and cognitive activities in the selected sport.

Research methods and organization. The authors developed the integral methodology for the development of cognitive abilities, including problem-based tasks aimed at qualitative and quantitative analysis, and searching for practical solutions for technical and tactical tasks in the selected sport. The selection of problem-based methods depended on the complexity level of cognitive tasks. The authors applied the complex of problem-based methods aimed at the development of the following cognitive processes: attention (‘Interference immunity’ test), memory (‘Figure recognition’ test), and thinking (‘Five’ test aimed at the identification of combinatory thinking). In order to determine the effectiveness of elaborated methods, the authors used the psychometrics methods based on the universal psycho-diagnostics complex (UPDK-MK) for quantitative and qualitative assessment of the level of effective development of cognitive abilities, aimed at the activation of training and cognitive activity of student-athletes.

Research results and discussion. The experiment involved the control group practicing basic sports in the framework of Excellence in Professional Activity and Physical Education course, and the experimental group practicing selected sports in the framework of Excellence in Professional Activity and Sports course. At the beginning of the experiment, we revealed the average development level of cognitive abilities by three studied parameters (attention, memory, and thinking). It enabled authors to reveal the cognitive complexity of performing tasks with differentiated objects, and to elaborate the cognitive card of sport activities for every student. At the end of the experiment, the control group showed the medium development level of a cognitive component, which reflects the development rigidity of cognitive processes. At the same time, the experimental group demonstrated the high development level of cognitive processes. It enabled authors to determine cognitive and style peculiarities of assimilating information with a view to elaborate an individualized psychological training program for student-athletes.

Conclusion. Therefore, the research results demonstrate the effectiveness of methodologies for the development of a cognitive component of student sports culture in the process of activation of education and cognitive activities.
