Objective of the study was to determine the effects of emotional burnout on interpersonal interaction of handball players.
Methods and structure of the study. The controlled psychological experiment was run on the basis of the Handball Federation of Russia, Moscow. Sampled for the study were 62 professional handball players aged 17-24 years. Their individual psychological characteristics were studied in two stages. At the first stage, 62 handball athletes were divided into two groups: those with and without the signs of the emotional burnout syndrome (V.V. Boyko’s Emotional Burnout Test). The group with already formed and developing emotional burnout syndrome included 42 subjects, the group without any indications of the emotional burnout syndrome - 20 subjects. The level of development of the handball players’ interpersonal communication qualities and skills were assessed using a sociocommunicative competency questionnaire.
Results and conclusions. The sources of the emotional burnout syndrome in handball are as follows: specifics of sports activity, high level of motivation and conation, mental agility, high cost of an individual error, fear of injury, frequent departures, interpersonal conflicts (with the coach, team members, etc.). Emotional burnout in handball players reduces their ability to effectively interact within the system of interpersonal relationships, which validates the research hypothesis.
