Objective of the study was to conduct a comparative analysis of the number of "Master of Sport of Russia" (MSR) titles awarded in separate martial arts and strength sports.
Methods and structure of the study. The study included an analysis of the normative legal documents and orders of the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation to award the sport title "Master of Sport of Russia". A total of 162 orders and normative legal documents that outline the requirements for awarding the sports titles and categories were analyzed. 11 martial arts and strength sports were selected: armwrestling, weightlifting, sambo, judo, karate, boxing, weightlifting, taekwondo, amateur wrestling. These sports were conditionally divided into two groups: those included (n=5) and not included in the Olympic Games program (n=6).
Results and conclusions. There were statistically significant differences in the number of Master of Sport of Russia titles awarded in martial arts and strength sports. The largest number of Master of Sport of Russia titles was awarded in 2019 in amateur wrestling, powerlifting, and sambo. The smallest number was registered in kettlebell lifting, weightlifting, and armwrestling. We conducted a comparative analysis of the qualification criteria for awarding the sport title MSR in amateur wrestling, sambo, and armwrestling. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to the development of certain sports-specific Unified Sports Classification System of Russia standards and qualification criteria. The study identified difficulties related to the gaps in the existing qualification criteria and conditions for awarding the sport title (on the example of armwrestling). Proposals were developed to improve the qualification criteria for awarding Master of Sport of Russia title and sports category Candidate Master of Sport in armwrestling.
