Digital approach to academic physical education and sports educational process

Objective of the study was to experimentally prove benefits of the digital information service to the physical education and sports educational process at the university to provide health protection, increase students’ motor activity, and improve their functional state.
Methods and structure of the study. The educational experiment was carried out on the basis of Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Moscow, and involved 6,812 students. During the study (2017-2020), the academic physical education curriculum was reorganized around fitness workouts. In addition, the experimental training model was characterized by a wider use of digital tools and diagnostic measures - to encourage students’ self-training, improve their knowledge about health protection and promotion, mechanisms of motor activity control, use of mobile applications for dietary monitoring and for tracking body composition and functional status. As part of the study, we held advanced training courses for the university physical education teachers, master-classes in the online physical training courses and digital services in the sphere of physical education and sports educational process. The software tools used were as follows: "Google Forms" surveys and tests, "Esteck System Complex" and "Omega-M" computerized functional test complexes; mobile apps: "Health", "Muscle and Motion", "Nike Run Club", "Nike+ trainingclub", etc.
Results and conclusions. The findings indicated a positive dynamics of the morphofunctional status of the university students, their motivation for physical education and sports activities, and increased motor activity as a result of the expansion of digital information resources and wider use of fitness tools. 45% of the surveyed students thought that physical trainings must be supplemented by the use of mobile applications, 26.7% were interested in the rapid and efficient methods to strengthen the muscle component, improve the muscle tone, and keep their weight down. 21.7% of the students rated the electronic information-educational environment at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics high (10 points).
