Objective of the study was to scientifically substantiate the sociocultural concept of physical recreation.
Methods and structure of the study. The intersection of the theoretical and empirical approaches based on the comparative analysis of human activity served as a methodological basis of the current study.
Results and conclusions. The study showed that physical recreation mostly functions in the human leisure sphere - the main life sphere, in which universal human culture manifests itself. Thus, it can be argued that physical recreation serves as an important means to endorse sociocultural values.
Personal recreational physical culture is a component of universal human culture, which is expressed in a positive attitude towards own health and a healthy lifestyle in general. It enables an individual to maintain the fullness and balance of physical and mental strength and ensures his/ her satisfaction with life and social well-being - integral indicators of the life quality of modern humans.
On the assumption of the difficulty and limitations of carrying out a pilot test of the proposed theoretical provisions, as well as the difficulties in using any tools for assessing the mechanisms and results of physical recreation in the sociocultural environment of man's living, the authors merely indicate the guidelines and possible ways to put the proposed theoretical provisions into practice.

Keywords: physical recreation, sports and recreational activities, sociocultural concept, leisure, human health.
