Abstract
Objective of the study was to identify the features of the development of physical education in Russia in recent decades.
Methods and structure of the study. The research methods included: a theoretical analysis of literary sources, an analysis of demographic statistics.
Results of the study and conclusions. The theoretical analysis showed that at the turn of the 20th to 21st centuries, a number of serious problems have arisen in the physical education and sports sector in the country: lack of sufficient funding, lack of public sports organizations, low level of specialist training. Towards 2010, various state concepts aimed at the effective development of the physical education and sports sector began to be developed and implemented. It is noted that with the introduction of the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex "Ready for Labor and Defence" (GTO) in 2014, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of young and older people engaged in physical activities.
The authors recommend using the measures to develop and implement a system of incentives and rewards for the population, as well as using social media to promote a healthy lifestyle among the population, covering different age groups.

Keywords: physical culture, modern development of physical education in Russia, the attitudes of the population to development of personal physical culture.
