Tourism in academic physical education service

Background. The Yakut Republican educational system management ranks tourism promotion projects on the whole and trekking tours in particular among the most promising health improvement solutions for the system with its high benefits for the responsible personality and environmental awareness development agenda.

Objective of the study was to theoretically substantiate and test by an experiment the methodology of optimization of physical condition of students by means of tourism.

Methods and structure of the study. The study summarizes the practical experience of trekking tours within the frame of the students’ field practices.

The study was run at the Arctic Innovation Center (AIC), a diversified research and education establishment. Sampled for the study were the 2-year North-Eastern Federal University geology students during the field practice on the Tomponsky testing ground in the Southern Verkhoyanye Mountains.

A geological route across the mountainous taiga terrains of the Southern Verkhoyanye Area is considered the core form of the geology students’ activity in the field practices. With the everyday trekking activity on the routes with a burden on shoulders, the lower limb, abdomen and chest muscle groups, as well as tendons work hard. Every step engages about fifty muscles in the movement sequence, besides the long trekking process effectively trains the vascular system and improves the capillary and collateral blood circulation, with the smallest blood vessels expanding to better feed the skeletal muscles and heart.

Results and discussion. In the 2018 field practice, the geology students completed 16 geological hikes varying in distances. The first three geological routes were designed for the overview purposes.  During this period, they covered 30.6 km and took 55 635 steps on average, being accompanied by the Training Ground teachers (see Table1 ).

The remaining 13 geological hikes were performed by the geology students on their own in the crews composed by the Training Ground management, with each crew of 5-6 student. Each student was estimated to cover these 16 routes with a total distance of 134 km 700 m by 258,261 steps in total.

The study found that at the end of the 2017 academic year, 68.9% of students were attested, 85% made the grade. In 2018, the number of certified students increased by 10%.

Conclusion. The study data and analyses showed benefits of the trekking tours and environmental awareness routes in the geological field practices as verified by the improved physical activity and health standards of students over the academic year, including the improved tolerance to fatigue, air temperatures and other climatic conditions with habitual physical activity critical for professional progress and competencies of the future specialist.

Abstract

The article analyses the practical experience of health tourism service to students and the service benefits, with an emphasis on the healthy lifestyle promotion and professional competence building ones; and summarizes the practical experience of trekking tours within the frame of the students’ field practices. The study was run at the Arctic Innovation Center (AIC), a diversified research and education establishment. Sampled for the study were the 2-year North-Eastern Federal University geology students during the field practice on the Tomponsky testing ground in the Southern Verkhoyanye Mountains. In the trekking tour design project the researchers analyzed the tour benefits for the lower limb, abdominal, chest and upper limb muscles and tendons, knowing that every step with a heavy backpack mobilizes about fifty muscles. Long trekking tours are known to effectively train vessels and improve the capillary and collateral blood circulation systems.

The study data and analyses showed benefits of the trekking tours and environmental awareness routes in the geological field practices as verified by the improved physical activity and health standards of students over the academic year, including the improved tolerance to fatigue, air temperatures and other climatic conditions with habitual physical activity critical for professional progress and competencies of the future specialist.
